HiSTORY

Founded in 1998 by the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association, Hockey Fights Cancer, presented by OhioHealth, unites the hockey community in support of cancer patients and their families to raise money and awareness for national and local organizations involved in cancer care and research.

The initiative gets an assist from players, coaches, officials, equipment managers, front office staff, corporate partners, and fans. Together, the hockey family looks to inspire hope and courage for those who are living with, going through, and moving past cancer. Since its inception, the Hockey Fights Cancer program, along with NHL Clubs, supporters, and fans, has donated more than $28 million to support the fight against cancer.

Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation

The fight against pediatric cancer has been one of the Blue Jackets Foundation's primary areas of focus since the team's inception in 2000. Hats For Heroes and additional fundraising programs have helped raise more than $4 million to fund a variety of support programs for pediatric cancer patients and their families, including therapy through distraction, critical research projects, and assistance in providing palliative care for youth.

Funds raised during Hockey Fights Cancer and throughout the year benefit the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation's pediatric cancer pillar. Each year thousands of patients and their families receive support. To learn more, please check out our community report.

Team Hospital Visit

In coordination with the Blue Jackets Hockey Fights Cancer initiative, CBJ players visit Nationwide Children's Hospital to help brighten the spirits of children in treatment.

Hats for Heroes

The Hats for Heroes program, featuring limited edition designs for each season, is an opportunity for the 5th Line to assist in the team’s fight against cancer. The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9's enduring partnership gives a boost to the program's success. Proceeds from the hat sales contribute significantly to the Foundation's efforts to fund a variety of support programs for pediatric cancer patients and their families in central Ohio.
